In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a soft, dreamy photo effect in Photoshop. We will be using just some gradients and adjustment layers to achieve the effect, so it should be easy enough for everyone to understand. Here’s the effect we’ll be creating:
To create a dreamy photo effect, you’ll need:
- Any recent version of Photoshop
Open your image in Photoshop. I will be using this image:
Then, create a new layer and name it “Lens Flare”. Fill this new layer with black, then go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare.
Use the settings shown below for the lens flare. The position of the lens flare can change according to the picture you are using.
Now, lower the Lens Flare layer’s opacity to about 60% and change its blending mode to Screen.
Create another new layer above all the other layers and name it “Bokeh”. Change this layer’s opacity to 60% and blending mode to Overlay.
Now, download any bokeh texture online and place it into this layer.
Add a Solid Color Fill Layer now by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Select a purple color for the fill layer, and change its opacity to 60% and blending mode to Screen.
Add another Solid Color Fill Layer like we did before and choose a lemon yellow color this time. Change this layer’s opacity to 60% and blending mode to Soft Light.
Add a Gradient Fill Layer now by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient and using a brown to transparent gradient. Use all the settings shown below.
Lower this layer’s opacity to 50% and change its blending mode to Soft Light.
Add another Gradient Fill Layer like we did before, but this time use a white to transparent gradient. Use all the settings shown below.
Set this layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.
And we’re done creating the dreamy photo effect! You could add another bokeh layer if you want to finish off the effect.
