How to Create a Grungy Bloody Text Effect in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a grungy bloody text effect in Photoshop. We will be using some custom brushes and applying some layer styles along with a couple of adjustment layers to complete the effect.

To create a grungy bloody text effect, you’ll need:

Step 1

Create a new document with a white background and paint on it with a light grey color using the cracks texture brush.

Create a new layer, lower its opacity to 30% and paint on it with a dark red using the cracks texture brush.

Step 2

Write your text with the Coolvetica font.

Double-click on the text layer to open the Layer Style dialog box and use the settings shown below.

Step 3

Create a new layer below the text layer, grab the splatter brush, keep the brush size very small and make some dark red blood behind the text.

Now, grab the Lasso Tool with about 40-50px feather, make a selection around the text and go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Using the Free Transform Tool, compress the clouds down.

Change the clouds layer’s blending mode to Color Burn.

Duplicate the clouds layer a few times to make the blood at the bottom of the text dark.

You can also resize and rotate the clouds layer vertically, and attach it to the left side of the text.

Do the same with the right side of the text.

Step 4

Create a layer on top of the other layers and using the smoke brush, paint some random patterns around the text. You can also add some bokeh around the text.

Now, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels and use the settings shown below.

Create a layer mask for the Levels adjustment layer and use the Gradient Fill tool to achieve this effect.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves and use the settings shown below.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance and use the settings shown below.

Step 5

Finally, we will add some filters to complete the effect. Flatten the image, duplicate the background layer, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and use the settings shown below.

Duplicate the background layer again, place it on the top, go to Filter > Artistic > Cutout and use the settings shown below.

Change this layer’s blending mode to Hard Light and we’re done! The grungy bloody text effect tutorial is complete!
