In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a plastic text effect in Photoshop. We will be applying some simple layer styles to make the text look like as if it is made out of plastic.
To create a plastic text effect, you’ll need:
- Any recent version of Photoshop
Open a new 640 x 480px document.
Press D to set the foreground and background colors to their defaults. Then, fill the document with black by pressing Alt+Backspace.
Select the Type Tool and choose your font.
Press X to make white the foreground color and then type your text.
Now, click on the Layer Styles option at the bottom of the layer palette.
Select Color Overlay from the list that appears and then click on the color swatch to change the color.
I am going to choose a light blue color, but you can choose whatever you want.
We will now add an Inner Glow to give the text a three-dimensional feel. To do that, select the Inner Glow option in the Layer Style dialog box and use the settings shown below.
For the color, choose the darker version of the color you used for the text.
Now, select the Bevel and Emboss option in the Layer Style dialog box. We will load some new contours now. To do that, click on the arrow shown below.
Now, click on the arrow on the top-right corner.
Select Contours from the list that appears and then click on Append.
Click again on the arrow on the top-right corner and select the Large List option.
Now, select the Ring – Triple contour.
And make the following changes to the Bevel and Emboss settings.
In the Layer Style dialog box, select the Contour option and select the Shallow Slope – Valley for the contour. Also, change the Range value.
Duplicate the text layer.
Select the original text layer, click on the Layer Style option at the bottom of the layers palette, select Stroke from the list that appears and change the Size.
Now, click on the color swatch to change the color.
Click near the edge of a letter to select a color that is about halfway between the darkest and lightest colors.
Again, open the Bevel and Emboss option in the Layer Style dialog box and use the settings shown below.
Select Shallow Slope – Valley for the Gloss Contour.
Also, change the Depth to 41% and the Size to 24px.
And we’re done! The plastic text effect tutorial is complete!
